Pool Opening and Maintenance in the Okanagan

Pool Opening and Maintenance in the Okanagan

With some of the hottest, sunniest summers in Canada, the Okanagan is prime pool country. But a pool is only a joy when the water is clean and balanced. Here is how to open your pool for the season and keep it swimmable through July and August.

Opening your pool in spring

Most Okanagan pools open in late spring once the risk of hard frost has passed and the weather starts warming. Opening is more than pulling off the cover. It means cleaning out winter debris, reconnecting and starting the equipment, and getting the water chemistry back into a safe, balanced range.

  • Remove, clean, and store the winter cover
  • Skim out leaves, pollen, and debris that built up over winter
  • Reconnect and start the pump, filter, and heater
  • Test and balance the water, then shock and let it circulate
💡

Okanagan spring pollen and cottonwood fluff can clog a freshly opened pool fast. Plan to skim and check the filter more often in the first few weeks after opening than you will need to mid summer.

Summer maintenance routine

Hot weather and heavy use mean chemistry shifts quickly, so a consistent weekly routine keeps the water clear and safe. Test regularly, skim and brush, empty baskets, and keep the filter clean. Heavy swim days and heat waves can call for extra attention.

  • Test and adjust chlorine and pH at least weekly
  • Skim the surface and brush the walls and floor
  • Empty skimmer and pump baskets
  • Backwash or clean the filter as needed

When to bring in help

Pool care is doable yourself, but it is also easy to fall behind during a busy summer, and green water is far harder to fix than it is to prevent. Recurring pool service keeps the chemistry dialed in and frees you to actually enjoy the pool rather than maintain it.

Holler Taskers who offer pool cleaning are vetted and background checked, so seasonal opening and weekly upkeep are handled by someone you can trust around your home.
