Furniture Assembly: When to DIY and When to Hire

Few things test a household like a box of flat pack furniture, an Allen key, and an instruction sheet with no words. Some assembly jobs are a quick and satisfying win, while others eat a whole weekend and end in a wobbly result. Here is how to tell the difference before you start.
When DIY makes sense
Smaller, simpler pieces are usually fine to tackle yourself, especially if you have basic tools and a bit of patience. A nightstand, a small bookshelf, or a single chair is the kind of thing most people can knock out in under an hour.
- The piece is small and the instructions are straightforward
- You have the tools and a clear space to work
- You are not on a deadline if it takes longer than expected
- It is a one off, not a whole house of furniture
When to hire help
Large, complex, or heavy items are where hiring pays off. Wall units, bunk beds, large wardrobes, and anything that needs wall anchoring are faster, safer, and sturdier when someone experienced handles them. The same goes for furnishing a whole home after a move, when the box pile is overwhelming.
- Large wardrobes, wall units, or modular systems
- Items that must be anchored to a wall for safety, like tall dressers and bunk beds
- A full home or office worth of furniture at once
- Anything where a mistake means a wobbly or unsafe result
Tall furniture like dressers and bookcases should always be anchored to the wall, especially in homes with kids. If you are not confident doing that safely, it is a strong reason to hire help.
Holler Taskers who offer furniture assembly are background checked and bring their own tools, so you can skip the Allen key frustration entirely.
