Pressure Washing 101: Driveways, Decks, and Siding in the Okanagan

After an Okanagan winter and a heavy pollen season, driveways, decks, and siding can look tired and grimy. Pressure washing is one of the most satisfying ways to refresh a property, but the wrong pressure or technique can damage surfaces. Here is what to know before you fire up the wand.
Driveways and concrete
Concrete and paver driveways handle high pressure well, which makes them the easiest place to start. Work in overlapping passes to avoid streaking, and use a surface cleaner attachment for an even finish. Oil stains and stubborn algae may need a degreaser or detergent first.
Decks and wood
Wood is far more delicate. Too much pressure will gouge and splinter the boards. Use a lower pressure, a wider fan tip, and keep the nozzle moving and at a distance. Always go with the grain. For older or softwood decks, sometimes a gentle wash and a brush beats blasting it.
Always test on an inconspicuous spot first and start with low pressure, increasing only as needed. You can always add pressure, but you cannot undo gouged wood or etched siding.
Siding and exterior walls
Vinyl siding cleans up nicely, but you should spray downward, not upward, to avoid forcing water behind the panels. Keep the nozzle well back, and never aim high pressure at windows, vents, or light fixtures. Stucco and certain finishes need a soft wash approach with detergent rather than raw pressure.
- Use the right tip and pressure for each surface
- Keep the nozzle moving to avoid concentrated damage
- Protect plants, lights, and outlets before you start
- Spray siding from above to angle water away from seams
When to hire a pro
If you do not own a washer, your home is two storeys, or you are dealing with delicate stucco or stained wood, hiring help is worth it. A pro brings the right equipment and knows how much pressure each surface can take, which protects your property and your time.
